Barbara A. Smythe, M.D.Dr. Smythe grew up in beautiful Southern Minnesota where she realized at an early age she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Smythe attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Biology. From there, she continued on to the Harvard University Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Through her studies in medical school, Dr. Smythe became interested in Ophthalmology. She always had an interest in helping people with chronic diseases and became fascinated about how computers are used to diagnose and treat vision problems. Dr. Smythe focused her interest by completing an Ophthalmology Residency at the University of California in Irvine. She was then awarded a Neuro-ophthalmology Research Fellowship from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and then completed her training with a Glaucoma Fellowship from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1991, Dr. Smythe received her Board Certification in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Smythe has been practicing as a glaucoma specialist in the greater Fort Worth Metropolitan area for over fifteen years. She is the medical director and founder of Glaucoma Consultants of Texas. She has served on numerous hospital boards and committees and had been an associate with Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Smythe maintains several professional memberships which include the following:

Barbara A. Smythe, M.D.Dr. Smythe has been honored with many awards throughout her medical career. In 2004 and 2005, she was named by other physicians in the Dallas Fort Worth area as one of the top physicians in Ophthalmology. She was awarded by the Consumer Research Council of America with the most prestigious recognition as one of “America’s Top Ophthalmologists”. In addition to her awards, Dr. Smythe has had several articles published, including her most recent one on “Filtration Surgery”, published in the Textbook of Ophthalmology, and the “Effect of Apraclonidine Treatment on Intraocular Pressure in Advanced Glaucoma” published in the Journal of Glaucoma.

In addition to being a successful physician, Dr. Smythe is a wife and mother. She is married to Greg Hanson, President and CEO of H&H Professional Services Group and the Glaucoma Consultants of Texas medical group. They have two children, eight-year old Katie and six-year old Brandon. They enjoy many activities as a family, as well as tennis, golf, reading, traveling and recreational flying.
